1 in 5 people in Canada have some form of mental illness, yet only around half of those people get treatment.
Why?
For many, the stigma associated with mental illness creates a sense of shame and fear of ostracization that makes it very difficult to move beyond their affliction.
Stigma is caused by misconceptions and a general lack of knowledge about mental illness. This results in isolation and fear, leading to a lack of support for those with mental illness to heal and move beyond their challenges.
The good news is that stigma can be conquered so that people afflicted with mental illness can feel confident enough to lead productive and fulfilling lives without the fear of being ostracized.
How?
By sharing your experiences of mental illness with those who may be unknowledgeable. And by those who wish to learn more, to listen, read the stories, and have a greater understanding of mental illness afflictions.
SHARE YOUR STORY
Many people have dealt with mental illness, either personally, knowing a family member, friend, school mate, or even a neighbour. We invite you to share your story. Share with us a moment of your time when you were dealing with your own or another’s mental illness.
Though I am sure some of you have had exasperating and frustrating experiences in your dealings with another’s mental illness, please try to keep your story respectful.
Somethings to consider: How did you know it was mental illness? How did you it make you feel? How do you cope with the stigma? Either as the target of the stigma or as one that is trying to dismantle it. If you’ve experienced mental illness yourself, what helped you recover? What is your advice for others?
By building a collection of stories, we are saying that it’s okay to talk about mental illness, and this will help to stop the silence of stigma. So share your story.
Tell you what, I’ll go first. But don’t leave me out here alone.
